Pakistan, Yemen Urge Proactive Role for OIC

ISLAMABAD, 13 April 2006 — Pakistan and Yemen have called for a proactive role for the Organization of Islamic Conference in dealing with issues faced by the Ummah. They also called for the implementation of decisions taken by the OIC summit held in Makkah. The two countries also called for closer coordination between OIC member states.

The joint communiqué was issued here at the conclusion of two-day official visit of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The communiqué further said that Pakistan and Yemen reaffirmed their commitment to the Palestinian people’s right to establish their independent state with Al-Quds as its capital, in accordance with the road map, the Arab peace initiative and the United Nations resolutions.

It also called on the international community to respect the choice of the Palestinian people and accept the election results.

President Pervez Musharraf and President Saleh in the communiqué emphasized the need for unity in Iraq to prevent sectarian and ethnic conflict in the country. They called for the formation of a national unity government representing Iraqis from all political and ethnic groups, and emphasized the need to preserve its territorial integrity and sovereignty. They condemned violence targeting Iraqi holy sites and innocent civilians.

The two leaders also called for a peaceful and just resolution of Kashmir dispute in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Kashmir for a lasting peace and stability in South Asia. The Yemeni president who concluded his two-day visit to Pakistan yesterday was seen off at the Chaklala Air Base by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.
