NEW DELHI, 15 April 2006 — Two explosions occurred yesterday evening inside the complex of the 17th century Jama Masjid situated in Delhi. The blasts occurred after Friday prayers, when the worshippers were getting ready for Asr prayers.

At least 12 people were injured, with three in critical condition. While the first blast occurred at around 5.30 p.m., the second occurred at around 5.40 p.m. Both blasts took place in the Wazu Khana, used for ablutions before prayers near Jama Masjid’s Gate No. 1. “The blasts took place near a water tank used by worshippers,” a mosque official said.

What caused the blasts and who was responsible for them was not clear. Both bombs were believed to be kept in plastic bags, according to observers. When the explosions occurred, around 100-150 people were in the area. The blasts were assumed to be of minor nature as no severe damage was caused to any part of the Jama Masjid.

“So far we have report of two injured and no information about the nature of the blast. Senior officials have rushed to the spot,” official sources said.
