JEDDAH, 17 May 2006 — Al-Ahli underscored their handball supremacy when they won their third championship of the season, beating Al-Qadisiya 16-15 in the final of the Prince Sultan ibn Fahd Cup.
A huge crowd came to watch the final match here. Ahli’s victory completed a domestic triple as the team also won the league and elite titles.
It also raised Ahli’s number of titles won to 46, a record that will be very difficult to match or surpass in the history of Saudi handball.
Ahli banked on their wealth of experience to turn back the spirited challenge from Qadisiya.
The first half ended in favor of Ahli 10-8. Bandar Al-Harbi, who was the star of the match, fired the winning goal with 30 seconds left to play. There was trouble in the match when Qadisiya players threatened to walk out of the match after they disputed the referee’s decision. Qadisiya had been reinforced by players loaned them by other teams in the league. But Ahli rose to the occasion and put an end to Qadisiya’s dreams.
