Handicapped Lifters Clinch 2 Silver Medals in Busan Worlds

The Saudi national handicapped team for weightlifting arrived on Sunday from Busan, Korea, bringing home two silver medals they won in the World Weightlifting Championship for Handicapped.

According to Ali Al-Nassir, member of the administration council at the Saudi Special Needs Federation, the Saudi team are now ranked 10th out of the 72 countries that entered the tournament. In addition, they also placed second in the team event after China. The Saudi campaign were bannered by Abdulmunim Al-Najjar, Ibrahim Al-Ibrahim, Mohammed Al-Bagashi, Bassam Al-Houl, Hussain Al-Hajji and Mohammed Al-Qahtani under the supervision of their coach Fahd Al- Dushaish and his assistant, Saad Al-Thiniyan.

Volleyball: The president of both Saudi and Arab Volleyball Federation, Ibrahim Al-Babteen, awarded Al-Mouj for their creditable performance that promoted them from the second division to first division at the Kingdom Clubs Championship.

Al-Muheet won the first set and Al-Mouj the next three sets during their encounter in the final match at the Youth Welfare stadium in Riyadh at the weekend.

The first set ended 25-19 for Muheet but Al-Mouj team captain managed to turn the tables on the enemy and went on to score the win thanks to the efforts of his teammates Sulaiman Al-Azzaz, Salih Al-Nafeesah, Sami Babboush, Abdulrahman Al-Azzaz and Bandar Al-Shaye. Secretary-general at the SAVF Salih Al-Qassim attended the final match while Al- Babteen presented Al-Mouj with the gold medals and Al-Muheet silver medals. The bronze medals went to Al-Adaalah team.

Tennis Table: The Saudi national team won six gold medals at the 12th GCC Table Tennis Championship in Kuwait recently.

General Presidency of Youth Welfare Prince Sultan ibn Fahd had offered the national team financial awards for their achievements in both the local and international competitions.

Among the players who attended the awarding were Khalid Al-Harbi, Abdulaziz Al-Abbad, Naif Al-Jadai and Usamah Al-Mihibis. The president of the Saudi Tennis Table Federation Mohammed Al-Husaini thanked the prince for his support and encouragement for this sport.

Athletics: Ahmed Al-Hibshi set a new national record in the shot put event in the Kingdom Athletics Championships at the Prince Naif ibn Abdulaziz Sport City in Al-Qateef.

Al-Hibshi threw the iron ball to a distance of 19.49 meters to break the 10-year old record of 19.03 held by Khalid Al-Khalidi.

Al-Hibshi was awarded a cash prize of SR1,000 for breaking the record and another SR1,000 for winning the event.

Saeed Mubarak was a far second at 17.51 meters while Abdulrahman Al-Khalidi came in third at 14.15.

Ali Al-Jadaani (Al-Ahli) won first place in javelin throw with a record effort of 66.83 meters. Nassir Al-Tuwairqi (Okaz) was second at 57. 89 meters and Mazen Matar (Al-Hada) third at 55. 88. Hamid Al-Bishi (Al-Nakheel) won the 400 meters in 46.30 seconds while Hamdan Al-Bishi, from the same club, came in second in 46.45. Issa Zaraah (Al-Ahli) checked in third in 48.18 seconds.

In the 1,500 meters Mohammed Hussain (Al-Ahli) took first place clocking three minutes and 45.07 seconds. Faisal Rabea (Damk) with a timing of 3: 53.07 and Abdullah Al- Joud (Al-Safa) with 3:53.07 finished second and third.

In the 110-meter hurdles race Idris Hawasawi from Hilal came first in 14.66 seconds followed by Mubarak Al-Mabadi (Al-Leith), 14. 87, and Saeed Saeed (Najran), 15. 13.

Winning the long jump was Ahmed Faiz from Al-Nakheel who leapt a distance of 7.93 meters. Hussain Al-Saba (Al-Khalij) placed second in 7.74 meters and Ahmed Al-Shurfa (Al-Khalij) third in 7.62 meters. Ali Al-Amri from (Okaz) topped the 5, 000 meters race in 13 minutes and 56.52 seconds. Hussain Abdullah (Najran) turned in the second best effort 14.48.43 while Ali Al-Shahrani (Ahli) clocked 15.23.20 for third place.
