ISLAMABAD, 5 June 2006 — Authorities imposed curfew on the North Waziristan town of Miranshah yesterday after an upsurge in violence in the tribal region. Army and the paramilitary Frontier Corps were given powers to shoot militants after two paramilitary troops were killed in an attack yesterday, military sources told Arab News. Two militants were also killed.
Militants attacked a checkpoint at Shadad Kot killing two paramilitary soldiers and injuring two others, the sources said. The army, backed by helicopter gunships, retaliated killing two militants.
According to another report, the two soldiers were killed and three wounded when a land mine went off in the North Waziristan region.
New Governor of the North West Frontier Province retired Lt. Gen. Ali Jan Aurakzai has said army will stay in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas until peace is restored”.
In another development, Baloch militants destroyed one of the main gas pipelines connecting Sui and the Loti gas field yesterday causing gas supply disruptions to many areas in Balochistan and Punjab.
