BHOPAL, India, 29 October 2006 — The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) yesterday suspended it’s a legislator and former Madhya Pradesh state minister Gaurishankar Shejwar for anti-party activities after he allegedly campaigned for expelled leader Uma Bharti’s Bharatiya Janashakti (BJS) party. Shejwar represents Sanchi in the state assembly.

BJP sources said the party took a serious view of Shejwar’s campaigning on behalf of BJS for the Oct. 30 Vidisha parliamentary by-election and the Bada Malhara assembly election.

“We received reports from everywhere that Shejwar, who had also been issued show cause notice sometime ago, is indulging in anti-party activities. In view of the seriousness of the matter, he was suspended,” state BJP chief Satyanarayan Jatiya said.

BJP sources said the party had asked Assembly Speaker Ishwardas Rohani to terminate Shejwar’s membership of the house.
