MADINAH, 1 July 2006 — The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Madinah has reported that it handled over 23,500 criminal cases last year.
According to the commission’s annual report for 1426AH (2005-2006), the vast majority of the cases involved drug trafficking and sexual harassment.
The report noted that out of a total of 23,516 cases, sex-related crimes accounted for 14 percent. These included harassment, illegal relationships, pimping and operating brothels and selling pornography.
The commission arrested 1,011 people for drug offenses and 52 others for practicing black magic, the report said.
The report noted that most people meddling in black magic were of African origin and in order to tackle the problem the commission had set up a special cell.
