Sharjah Seeks Cultural Roots With New Department

SHARJAH, 1 July 2006 — The emirate of Sharjah will have a special department for museums as part of its effort to establish itself as a cultural and tourism destination in the region, the official Emirati news agency WAM reported yesterday.

Sheikh Sultan ibn Mohammed Al-Qasimi, the ruler of Sharjah, issued an administrative resolution setting up the department.

The department shall enjoy a legal character with an independent budget.

According to the resolution, the department’s main task is to protect and promote museums in the emirate and foster fertile environment to make these facilities a cultural and leisure destination.

In carrying out its duties and realizing its objectives, the resolution authorized the department to initiate cooperation with prominent international museums and research centers.

“The department can hire experts and seek assistance from the local bodies to support its administrative and technical mission,” the resolution said.
