Jamali to Contest for Party Post

ISLAMABAD, 10 August 2006 — Former Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has announced his candidature for the post of secretary-general of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q).

As a pre-requisite for the general elections, the Election Commission has made it mandatory for all the political parties to hold party elections before going for the parliamentary elections. Ruling Pakistan Muslim League has already conducted elections for the posts of its provincial heads.

In Punjab, Chief Minister Pervez Elahi won provincial presidential election of the party. Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim and his Balochistan counterpart Jam Yousaf also won party elections in their respective states.

In the North Western Frontier Province, though the ruling Muslim League does not hold majority, it got its President Amir Muqam, who is a federal minister, elected.

Jamali who was replaced as premier by the then president of the PML (Q), Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, long nurtured an ambition to play a key role in politics. Presently, journalist-turned politician Syed Mushahid Hussain is the secretary-general of the PML (Q).

Jamali has already announced to support Chaudhry Shujaat for the presidentship of the party.
