JEDDAH, 12 September 2006 — Al-Ahli defeated Al-Wehda 2-0 last night in the Saudi soccer league at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium here. Turki Al-Thagafi and Ali Al-Abdali scored goals in the 44th and 80 minutes as Ahli won on their debut at home in the competition.
Shanqiti’s Golden Leap
RIYADH — Saudi disabled athlete Usamah Shanqiti won the triple jump gold medal on Sunday at the close of the International Paralympic Committee’s World Athletics Championships in Assen, Netherlands.
Shanqiti posted a winning jump of 15.17 meters. With the victory Shanqiti qualified for the Paralympic Games to be held in conjunction with the summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China in 2008.
Al-Khuwailidi Shines
in Germany
RIYADH — Mohammed Al-Khuwailidi did Saudi Arabia proud when he took second place in the long jump at 8.34 meters in the recent World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany.
The feat earned Al-Kuwailidi a spot on the Kingdom’s 4 X 400-meter relay team that will see action in the World Athletics Championships, which start on Thursday in Athens, Greece. Also making the relay team were Mohammad Al-Salihi and Hamid Al-Bishi.
Saudi Riders to Take Part in ME Tilt
AMMAN — The country’s top riders will represent Saudi Arabia in the Middle East Equestrian Championship for Arabian Horses to be hosted by Amman from Sept. 17 to 19. Badir Al-Nuhait, general president at King Abdul Aziz Arabian Equestrian Center, confirmed the Kingdom participation in the prestigious event.
In addition to 11 horses from the center the Kingdom is also fielding enries from Al-Khalidiyah stable and Abdulmalik Al Al-Sheikh.
The Saudi delegation would be accompanied by a full complement of doctors, trainers and experts in show jumping event.
Saudi-Algeria Dual Meet
MAKKAH — Makkah will host the training camp and friendly matches between Saudi and Algerian judo and taekwondo teams from Sept. 18 to 28 under Memorandum of Understanding in the field of sports between the two countries.
Meantime, Saudi Arabian Judo and Taekwondo Federation resumes its season activities with 28 championships starting from this weekend. — Razan Baker
