MANAMA, 23 September 2006 — Two Saudi men and a Bahraini were detained by Bahraini authorities on Thursday night after they attempted to import contraband into the country via King Fahd Causeway.
The cargo in a truck raised alarm after a routine check revealed swords, daggers, communication devices, remote-controlled airplanes, security cameras, plastic guns and fireworks in the container.
The two men were detained along with the Bahraini who had arrived on the causeway to help them clear the customs.
Sources said that the Saudis claimed to have obtained the items for the purpose of exporting through an auction by Saudi authorities to sell confiscated material and that the Bahraini, a businessman, had agreed to buy the items from them.
All three men are currently held by the Bahraini police, who have obtained a warrant to search the premises of the Bahraini businessman as the investigation continues.
The incident comes just days after the authorities revealed that they had detained eight Bahrainis for attempting to join militants fighting in Afghanistan.
