DUBAI, 28 September 2006 — William Lawrie, Christie’s expert on modern and contemporary Arab and Iranian art, has been named as a jury member for the Shaikha Manal Young Artist Award “New Signature 2006” competition organized by the Dubai Ladies Club and sponsored by Dubai Properties.
The New Signature contest has a two-pronged purpose: To promote emerging artists in the UAE, and educate the general public on the importance of art.
A grand cumulative prize of AED100,000 will be awarded to the first three winners of the art contest. Evaluating the submissions will be a jury of eight noted representatives of the global art community, including South Africa, Holland, the United Kingdom, Jordan, and the UAE.
The contest is open to artists, 18-30 years-old. Contestants are allowed to submit two entries. The competition is divided into three categories: 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional and new media artwork.
The first prizewinners of the competition will be awarded AED50,000. In addition, the winning artwork will be exhibited at Christie’s international public art exhibition in late January at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers as well as a solo exhibition hosted by the Dubai Ladies Club. The second and third prizewinners will be awarded AED30,000 and AED20,000 respectively.
