CAIRO, 29 September 2006 — Egyptian writer Salah Hashim criticized Egyptian and Arab films for their negligence to portray the realities of the contemporary world.
“Arab films, particularly those produced in Egypt in the past 50 years, neither take into consideration the concerns of the viewers nor make an attempt to be on a level with the realities of life,” Hashim said in his latest book on Arab Films, “Arabs Films Are Like an Ode to the Earth.”
The France-based writer noted with dismay that the Arab filmmakers are keen to distance themselves from the desire of viewers to get a real insight into the complex issues faced by them in life.
The writer stressed that the real function of cinema is to stand up against injustice in all its forms. It should also increase our awareness about our contemporary world and past history.
