AMMAN, 1 October 2006 — Jordan’s King Abdallah and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will hold summit talks in Cairo today in a bid to spur the stalled Middle East peace process, according to a Royal Court statement. “The meeting takes place in the course of coordination and consultation on ways of reinvigorating the peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians,” the statement said.
The Jordanian-Egyptian summit comes hours before the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrives in the Middle East on a landmark trip avowedly aimed at bringing peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians back on track.
In addition to Israel and the Palestinian territories, Rice also plans to visit Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Jordanian officials have said that in the wake of Lebanon war, Jordan in coordination with Egypt and Saudi Arabia, planned to launch a joint initiative aimed at finding a comprehensive settlement for the Arab-Israeli conflict.
