ISLAMABAD, 12 October 2006 — Police arrested a provincial minister and his brother in a murder case in northwestern Pakistan yesterday after a court rejected their “bail-before-arrest” pleas.

Inayatullah Khan, health minister of the MMA-ruled North West Frontier Province (NWFP), and his brother Anwar Khan were named as instigators in the murder of a government officer, Jehanzeb Khan. Local television channel Geo said Jehanzeb had a property dispute with the two brothers.

Inayatullah and his brother Ali Khan sought interim bail on Sept. 8 from Nowshera Sessions Court. The bail was rejected and the two were arrested. Inayatullah belongs to Jamaat-e-Islami and is an important member in the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal government that runs the province.
