JEDDAH, 12 October 2006 — Saudi Arabia will host the 9th Congress of the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM 2006) in Riyadh under the patronage of Prince Sultan ibn Fahd, president of General Presidency of Youth Welfare and the Saudi Football Federation from Nov. 19 - 22.
According to previous records the first conference was held in Hong Kong in 1992, the second in Philippines 1996, third in Oman 2000, fourth in Pakistan 2001(cancelled due to war), fifth in Korea 2002, sixth in Sri Lanka 2003, seventh in Brunei 2004 and eighth in Japan 2005.
The conference to be held at King Fahd Cultural Center is expected to attract around 100 international attendees from other foreign sports federations and scientists and doctors who specialized and interested in sports medicine. According to Dr. Saleh Al-Konbaz, general-secretary at the Saudi Sports Medicine Federation, the conference would include 15 hours of continues scientific education that is approved by the Saudi Health Commission.
Dr. Yazid Al-Ohaly, chairman of the Organizing Committee would supervise the conference with the help of Dr. Saleh Al-Harthi, chairman of the Scientific Committee, Dr. Saleh Al-Konbaz, chairman of the Administrative Committee, Dr. Soliman Al-Suhaimi, chairman of the Information Committee and Dr. Waleed Al-Dali, chairman of the Public Relations Committee.
This year’s conference will discuss topics such as, biomechanics, doping in sport, exercise physiology, medical aspects of exercise and sports, physical activity, fitness and health, sports equipment and technology, sports nutrition and biochemistry, sports orthopedics and traumatology, sports psychology and sports rehabilitation. In addition there will also be a technical exhibition held alongside the scientific program to allow delegates to explore the latest technological advances, the newest equipment and the most up to date information. Exhibits and demonstrations will range from pharmaceuticals, books to orthopedics and rehabilitation equipment.
