Food and Drink Top List of Saudi Expenses

TABUK — We spend money on what’s important to us. And what’s important are the things that keep us going, like food. According to a Ministry of Economy and Planning study, food and drink top the list of domestic expenses. A report in the Al-Madinah daily yesterday also said that transportation ranked seventh and education fourth. Which only proves that we can go through life stupid and sedentary, but hungry? Not if we can help it!

Man Decides Mosque Sermon is ‘Open Mic’

TABUK — A man in Tabuk mistook a mosque for a place to practice “slam poetry” — or what normal people would call “incomprehensible gibberish.” Police in Tabuk had to subdue the man who walked up to the front of a mosque congregation, grabbed the microphone and began gesticulating and uttering nonsense into the mic. A sharp object the man was carrying injured one cop as they subdued the raving loon. People who knew the man told the Okaz daily yesterday that he hadn’t been normal since he lost a lot of money on the stock market.

Get ’Em While They’re Down

RIYADH — A group of young thugs rushed into the ladies section of a mosque and snatched up the purses of the women while they were supplicating, the Al-Watan daily reported yesterday. One woman said she had SR11,000 ($2,934) in her purse to give to charity, a common practice during Ramadan. The women interviewed about the crime said they never dreamed that such a crime would take place in a mosque. “What’s the world coming to?” they asked.
