JEDDAH, 8 November 2006 — The Saudi Telecom Company (STC) has set an example of a national company realizing its responsibility of serving the country in international forums.

It has announced its full support for Sami Al-Basheer, the Saudi candidate for the post of director of the telecommunication development bureau with the International Telecommunication Union, in his endeavor to win the post in the elections that will take place in Antalya, Turkey, on the sidelines of the ITU plenipotentiary conference, which will be end on Nov. 24.

The company has offered Al-Basheer and the Saudi delegation to this important international gathering all kinds of material and moral support.

It will also sponsor a reception that the Kingdom’s delegation, headed by Minister of Communication and Information Technology Mohammed Jameel Mulla, will hold for all the delegates to the conference. Hundred and ninety countries are being represented in the meet.

“It’s an honor for all of us as Saudis to see a Saudi candidate compete for this important international post for the first time in the history of the Kingdom, which reflects the development and international status of the Saudi communication sector,” Saad ibn Dhafer Al-Qahtani, STC general director of media affairs and marketing support, said.

Al-Basheer, general manager of international affairs at the Saudi Communication and Information Technology Commission (SCITC), expressed profound thanks and appreciation to Saudi Telecom for its generous support for his election campaign.

Speaking before leaving Riyadh, Al-Basheer said he was strongly optimistic that he would be elected to the post, especially in light of the support he enjoys from the GCC communication and information technology ministers, most of the Arab countries, and many other foreign countries.

He said he would work to bridge the digital gap between the developing and less developed countries and spread communication and IT services across the world.
