Indian Girl Sings for 61 Hours to Enter Guinness Book

BHOPAL, 11 November 2006 — A 16-year-old girl from the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh’s commercial capital, Indore, sang for 61-hours non-stop to get her name registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. Akansha Jachak sang 725 old and new songs, which included remixes, till late Thursday night to the backdrop of fireworks. Officials from the Guinness Book of World Records, who have been monitoring her performance since Nov. 7, are said to soon make an announcement of whether the 16-year-old has been successful or not. Attributing her success to her parents and loved ones, Akanksha said she wanted to take up singing as a career. Akansha was later taken in a procession to Rajwada, a historical monument, where people congratulated her. Madhya Pradesh Public Works Department Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, who was present at the function, said State Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced to give 100,000 rupees to Akansha for her extraordinary performance. Akanksha has also been selected for an award called the Rashtriya Bal Puruskar-2005, which will be presented to her by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Nov. 14.
