ISLAMABAD, 20 November 2006 — The Supreme Court will hear a petition today concerning a dispute over the Supreme Court Bar Association elections in which two candidates have staked claim to the presidency of the SCBA.
Some 10 judges will assist Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry in the case.
The petition was filed by Munir A. Malik, who was declared SCBA president. Later, his opponent Raja Haq Nawaz emerged a winner in a recount conducted by Malik Mohammed Qayyum, the outgoing SCBA head who was acting as a returning officer.
The SCBA polls were held on Oct. 31 across the country and according to the results announced two days later, Malik was declared SCBA President.
The results were annulled by Qayyum on Nov. 5 following the recount that declared Haq Nawaz the winner. The chief justice has termed the case very important.
