MUMBAI, 24 December 2006 — A clash between rival groups of prisoners in the high security Arthur Road jail here yesterday morning resulted in the death of one inmate and injuries to three . The dead man was identified as John D’Souza. The injured prisoners were taken to the nearby JJ Hospital for treatment.
According to the police, the clash took place in barrack No. 4 in the prison over one gang suspecting the other of having tipped the police regarding its activities.
Police said a clearer picture about the cause of the clash would emerge after the interrogation of the three injured prisoners.
They dismissed all speculation of the clash having taken place between gangs of underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim or Chotta Rajan.
