JEDDAH, 30 January 2007 — A blank sheet of paper with a name written on it was the only thing a Saudi student could muster recently for an important exam, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. The reason? The 18th Gulf Cup. The young man said he went to bed in tears when Saudi Arabia lost to the UAE in the semifinals and didn’t prepare for his test.

Cop Shoots Cop Over Kids’ Fight

DAMMAM, 30 January 2007 — The children of two police officers here got into a fight, resulting in gunshot wounds to one of the officers, the daily Al-Yaum reported yesterday. Apparently one cop shot another in the neck over some dispute involving the cause of the kids’ fight. The wounded officer was taken to the hospital and the other one to the local jail where he is being held pending an inquiry into the shooting.
