Ahli Handball Team Win on Debut

JEDDAH — Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli debuted with a 33-31 victory over Al-Qadisiya of Kuwait yesterday in the 27th Gulf Handball Championship for Clubs in Bahrain.

Prior to the start of the tournament Ahli were in a training camp for a week in Egypt where they played friendly matches with local teams. Seeing action in the event that ends on March 13 are eight teams divided into two groups. Ahli of Bahrain, Masqat of Oman, Qadisiya of Kuwait, Ahli of Saudi Arabia comprise Group A, and the Group B teams are Al-Sulibikhat of Kuwait, Ein of UAE, Ahli of Qatar and Al-Najmah of Bahrain. The Saudi squad included Ibrahim Aiyed, Talal Aiyed, Ahmed Younbawi, Mohammed Younbawi, Turki Younbawi, Ahmed Al-Harbi, Bandar Al-Harbi, Faisal Fallatah, Abdulilah Bargat, Hussain Ikhwan, Hassan Bahswan, Amin Al-Safri, goalkeeper Manaf Yousif and Macedonian pros Jouran and Nabil Al-Obaidi.

Ahli meet their namesake from Bahrain in their second game tomorrow.

Al-Tarf Club Rule Kingdom Athletics

JEDDAH — The Kingdom Athletics Championships for first division team ended yesterday at Prince Faisal ibn Fad Stadium in Riyadh. Al-Tarf Club won the championship crown with 157 points. Second place went to Al-Ansar club with 150 points and Al-Adalah club placed third with 79 points. Twelve clubs saw action in this championship, namely Al-Sawab, Al-Huda, Al-Tarf, Al-Nour, Al-Ansar, Hittein, Mudar, Al-Khuwailidiyah, Al-Tasamuh, Al-Adalah, Al-Sarrah and Al-Washm. The athletes competed at 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 3000m hurdles, 10, 000m, 100mx4 relays, 400mx4 relays, pole vaulting, high jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin throwing, hammer throw, shot put and discus throw events.

Hilal Spikers Gear Up for Gulf Championship

JEDDAH — Al-Hilal fly today to Dubai where they enter training camp for a few days before proceeding to Qatar for the 26th GCC Volleyball Championship for Clubs. “It is going to be one of the toughest Gulf championships for clubs because this year they allowed the participation of foreigners in addition to the locals,” said Yassir Al-Al-Makawni of Hilal. The event is scheduled for March 15 to 21 and Hilal would meet Al-Arabi of Qatar in their first match. After missing the Arab Championship for Clubs in Tunisia Hilal are looking to do good in the tournament. To reinforce the side are the Tunisian players.
