The health minister announced a few days ago that employees at his ministry had been found to be stealing medicines. Prior to this, the health minister had announced that the ministry had come to realize that a number of employees were taking bribes and performing badly at work. This leaves one to question what the situation must be in other government ministries.

Why are we not hearing about cases of corruption at the Education Ministry, at the Labor Ministry, or at the Social Affairs Ministry? Does it mean that the Health Ministry is the only government agency with problems?

It takes a lot of courage to make an announcement like this. This is something that we should appreciate together with the fact that action is being taken to put a stop to this.

However, this is not enough. We are in great need of cleaning other ministries and institutions. It is impossible to say there are ministries and institutions in the Kingdom where bribes are not accepted and where workers are not neglectful of their duties within.

The correct procedure is to make observations and then announcements about the different types of corrupt activities that are found and then the subsequent action that is taken to put a stop to them. This must be done if we are serious about reforming our social institutions.

Some might think that publicly disclosing information about corruption leads to the agency concerned gaining a bad reputation. They then argue that it is preferable to remain silent and hide the truth.

Many people know that there are inappropriate things happening inside these institutions. If people were not aware of them fully they would in the least be aware of some of the things happening therein. This leaves one to imagine how bad the corruption must be.
