DHAKA, 17 March 2007 — Security forces led by the army early yesterday raided the office of a company owned by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s second son Arafat Rahman in Dhaka and seized some documents.
The security forces also raided the office of detained Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury in the same area.
Sources said the army-led forces cordoned off the area late Thursday night and conducted the raid that continued for hours.
Meanwhile, defense lawyers of Tareque Rahman, Khaleda’s detained son has sought bail from a Dhaka court.
Tareque was detained for a month on the order of the Home Ministry. Judge Momin Ullah of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court fixed April 4 for hearing the case.
The bail petition was filed with the higher court against the rejection order of the lower court on March 8.
In the charge sheet, police claimed that during the BNP rule, Tareque, his friends and business partners amassed a huge amount of wealth through corruption.
He is also said to have received commission from those who appointed people to different posts in the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
Road Accident Kills 2 Cricketers
A speeding ambulance slammed into a motorcycle in southwestern Bangladesh yesterday, killing test cricketer Manjural Islam and another domestic player.
Manjural, who has played six tests and 25 limited-overs internationals, died instantly, the United News of Bangladesh agency reported.
The accident took place in Khulna district, 136 kilometers southwest of the capital, Dhaka.
Manjural, who was not included in Bangladesh’s World Cup squad, and his friend, Sajjadul Islam, were on the motorbike. Sajjadul was a player in a local cricket club.
Further details were not immediately available.
Left-arm spinner Manjural, 22, made his ODI debut in November 2003 at the age of 19 and his test debut in the same season against Zimbabwe.
He averaged 23 wickets at an average of 29.95 in the one-day format, with best figures of 4-34 and a batting average of 20.
Manjural played his last One-Day International against Kenya in March 2006 at home and his last test was against India in December 2004.
