MANAMA, 18 March 2007 — A pregnant Saudi woman died early yesterday morning at a Manama hospital following a car crash late Friday night that left her Saudi husband seriously injured.
Hanan Ayad Al-Anazi, 30, was freed by 16 firefighters within minutes of the car crash after she was left trapped in the passenger seat. However, she died later in hospital as a result of internal bleeding. She was four months pregnant and efforts by doctors to save her and that of the couple’s unborn child failed.
Her husband Yousif Zaid Al-Anazi, also 30, who was driving the car, was also seriously injured in the accident. He was rushed to a nearby hospital after suffering a severe head injury. Currently he is critically ill and breathing with the assistance of a ventilator.
Yousif, a Saudi born in Kuwait, was due to undergo a life-saving operation yesterday. The couple, believed to be from Riyadh, were at an intersection on the Al-Fateh highway in Manama when their car collided with a Toyota Land Cruiser being driven by a 20-year-old Bahraini.
The Bahraini driver, who was not injured in the crash, was arrested after he assaulted two policemen as they tried to stop him from leaving the scene. One of the policemen needed hospital treatment.
Traffic police are investigating the accident. Witnesses say that the Bahraini driver jumped a red light.
