Maids Attempt Suicide in Bahrain

MANAMA, 3 April 2007 — Police received two separate reports of Asian maids wanting to commit suicide, reported the Akbar Al-Khaleej newspaper. Police were called to the home of a man, whose maid had threatened to kill herself using a kitchen knife. Police managed to restrain the maid, who said she was threatening to commit suicide because she was angry with her employer. The second report was received from a housewife, who said her maid wanted to jump from a three-story building. Police say the maid denied she wanted to commit suicide and that she had threatened to do so after an argument over pay.

Woman Praised for Saving Baby

DUBAI, 3 April 2007 — Police in Dubai praised a Sri Lankan woman for saving a newborn baby from certain death, reported Al-Bayan newspaper. The woman found the baby in dumpster and immediately brought it to a local police station. Officers are currently looking for the baby’s mother.

Carelessness Causes Dubai Car Thefts

DUBAI, 3 April 2007 — Jamal Khalifa Al-Mari, the deputy general manager of Dubai police, said 20 cars were stolen last year because of sheer carelessness on the part of owners, who left their cars running while popping into local corner shops, reported Al-Bayan.

2,325 Quit Smoking in Sharjah

SHARJAH, 3 April 2007 — According to a report published by the Preventive Medicine Department, 2,325 people from Sharjah stopped smoking in the past year, reported Al-Muheet nwspaper. Of those who have stopped smoking, 534 are under 20; 2,136 are men and 534 are women. The report added that 6,400 people have showed an interest in giving up smoking and consulted the department to help them kick the habit.

Egyptian Caught With Fake Dinars

KUWAIT, 3 April 2007 — An Egyptian expatriate was arrested after being found with counterfeit Kuwaiti dinars. The man was arrested after buying a cell phone from a Pakistani man using fake currency, reported the daily Al-Rai.

Drunkard Arrested for Harassment

KUWAIT, 3 April 2007 — Traffic police arrested a young man for sexually harassing three girls, reported the Al-Rai newspaper. Police arrested the man who was found to be drunk. On searching his car, police found hashish, alcohol and speed pills.

Obscene Texts Annoy Manama Residents

MANAMA, 3 April 2007 — Local people complained to cell-phone operators after thousands of people received non-stop text messages promoting the services of prostitutes, reported the Akbar Al-Khaleej daily. The messages were sent from unknown numbers and were heavily circulated over the weekend.
