MAKKAH, 1 May 2007 — A driver for a local charity here was caught speeding in the organization’s delivery van, according to the local daily Al-Madinah yesterday. The speeder was issued a creative punishment for his crime: He was sentenced to pay for 500 meal packages for children. Traffic officials came up with this creative punishment when they learned that a group of children would go hungry if the man was detained and processed with his vehicle in the impound lot. The driver agreed to pay for the 500 meals at SR10 apiece in order to expedite his release so he and his vehicle could return to their duties.
