JEDDAH, 21 May 2007 — Usamah Ammar from Makkah, Nawwaf Al-Otaibi from Taif, and Hussain Samkari from Makkah were the first three winners in the Western Province Snooker Championship, which ended here on Friday. Fifty cue artists from Jeddah, Makkah, Taif and Madinah saw action in the five-day event. Abdullah Hamza of the Saudi Billiard and Snooker Committee said the tournament is of the strongest staged locally. Highest break award went to Ahmed Sarhan with 54. Abdullah Al-Subhi won the youngest athlete award and best payer award. Meanwhile, Al-Subhi is now preparing for the Under-21 Asian Championship to be held in Doha from May 26. Al-Subhi is traveling to Doha with his coach Ahmed Aseeri. Ahmed and his younger twin brother Nezar are to be sent on training abroad by the snooker committee as a reward for being the Kingdom champion and second runner-up.
Al-Khuwailidi Claims Gold in Jordan
JEDDAH, 21 May 2007 — Saudi national athletics team long jumper Mohammed Al-Khuwailidi emerged champion on Friday in the 15th Arab Athletics Championship held in Amman, Jordan. Al-Khuwailidi leapt a distance of 7.93 meters to win the gold.
Water Polo Al-Nokhbah Championship
JEDDAH, 21 May 2007 — Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli water polo teams clash in a derby match on Wednesday. Victory by Ahli would give them the title having won the first game of the title series . In case Ittihad win a deciding match would be played on Friday.
Saudi Gymnasts Head to World Cup
JEDDAH, 21 May 2007 — Saudi gymnasts Maki Al-Mubiareek and Amin Al-Halali leave on Wednesday for Moscow where they will represent the Kingdom in the Gymnastics World Cup to begin on May 25. Joining the Saudi duo is their Armenian coach Edward Gean. Al-Mubiareek and Al-Halali are both entered in only one discipline as a result of their injuries recently. Mubiareek will do the vault and Halali the parallel bars.
