ALKHOBAR, 22 May 2007 — The Modern Electronics Company, a subsidiary of the Al-Faisaliah Group (AFG), yesterday announced the results of the Sony Creative Science Award 2007, which was participated by over 800 students from more than 100 boys and girls schools.

The judging committee, which found it extremely difficult to select the winning projects of the Eastern Province, awarded first place to Abdul Rahman Al-Buhairi of Hager Elementary School for his “Counting Power of Breath” project. Second place went to Abdullah Adnan Al-Basri of Al-Dahiah Al-Ahliah School for his “Water Car” project.

Remarkably, this year’s results showed that girl students got six premier places out of 10. Lama Monahi Al-Mutairi, Fatimah Taha Hassan Al-Felfel and Alaa Muhammad Al-Ghamdi got the third, fourth and fifth places respectively.

A recognition award was presented to teacher Munira Muhammad Al-Qahtani of the First Preparatory School and a similar award was given to another teacher at the school.

AFG President Prince Muhammad Al-Faisal said that the goal of the Sony Award was to challenge creativity and competency among the youth. “As they comprise more than 75 percent of the population of the Kingdom, it is a ‘must’ to develop the scientific scene for them to apply their creativity and innovations for the future of the country,” he said.

The Sony Creative Science Award, the first-ever initiative of its kind in the Kingdom, was undertaken for the first time in 2005. The award has been established to promote creativity among children and open their minds to scientific curiosity. The primary requirement for participation in this annual award is that all entries submitted to the panel of judges must be based on at least one scientific principle, such as the characteristics of air, electricity, magnetism and gravity.

The final ceremony for distribution of the Sony Creative Science Award 2007 was held at the Prince Sultan Science and Technology Center in Alkhobar and was attended by officials from the Ministry of Education, businessmen and student participants. The audience enjoyed the science show performed by Japanese scientific entertainer Nishimura, who specially came from Japan to perform at the ceremony.
