JEDDAH, 23 May 2007 — The Saudi national athletics team returned yesterday from Amman, Jordan where they won second place with six gold and three silver medals in the 15th Arab Athletics Championship. Morocco clinched the first position and Qatar third in the four-day competition that ended on Monday.
Long jumper Mohammad Al-Khuwailidi leapt a distance of 7.93 meters to start the Saudi golden harvest of victories.
Asia’s fastest man Yahya Habeeb clinched the gold medal in the 100 meters event with a clocking of 10.41 seconds. Idrees Hawasawi won the 400m hurdles in 51.14 second to account for the Kingdom’s third gold.
Mohammed Al-Qaree broke a new record in winning the decathlon gold medal with 650 points.
Saudi Arabia also swept the relays in the 100m and 400m.
Hamid Al-Bishi won silver medals in the 400 meters with a clocking of 46.33 seconds and 200 meters.
Jameel Fakhri landed the third silver for Saudi Arabia in the long jump leaping a distance of 2.20 meters.
Among other results for the Saudi team Yahya Gahis placed fourth in the 100m in 10.5 seconds, Ismael Al-Sibyani seventh in the 400m race and Ali Al-Zaki and Sami Al-Haidar fourth and fifth in the 100m.
