DUBAI, 25 May 2007 — The Dubai-based Gulf Research Center, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Geneva Center for Security Policy, will organize an intensive three-day Executive Learning Program on “Nuclear Power Generation for Oil and Gas Producing Countries,” on July 4-6, 2007, in Geneva.
In recent months, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have maintained renewed interest in participating actively in the development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. This was confirmed by the recent decision of the 27th GCC summit in Riyadh to launch a joint nuclear research program. The final communiqué reaffirmed the right of the GCC countries to develop nuclear power technology for peaceful purposes. They called for a comprehensive study that will lay down the basis for a joint program for generating nuclear power in line with the international laws and standards.
The three-day program in Geneva will offer high-ranking government officials and personnel of key departments in the GCC countries the opportunity to improve their information background and understanding of nuclear issues. The lectures will be delivered by leading international experts in the field of nuclear energy, covering specialized themes such as “nuclear technology for power generation,” “oil, gas and nuclear energy: friends or foes?” “waste treatment and disposal,” “geopolitical considerations of nuclear power development,” “legal aspects and regulation of nuclear power,” among others.
