YANBU, 10 June 2007 — Police recently arrested a drug smuggler, who was in possession of seven kilograms of hashish worth SR100,000 on the Madinah-Yanbu highway.
According to police, the man, who is in his 30s, was stopped at a checkpoint 160 km away from Madinah. Police became suspicious of the man, who was driving a grey Chevrolet.
On an initial search, they did not find anything but when they checked again they found packs of hashish tucked away in a secret hiding place in the trunk of the car.
Police seized the drugs and arrested the man, who was transferred to the custody of anti-drugs police in Badr for further questioning.
The man had passed several checkpoints without being apprehended.
Meanwhile, counter-narcotics authorities announced that a shipment of three million speed pills was discovered at one of the ports in the Kingdom, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday.
The report didn’t say at which port of entry the drugs were discovered or when the drugs were found.
The report did however hail cooperation between Saudi anti-drug officers and Saudi customs authority in busting the shipment.
Although the specific name of the drug wasn’t disclosed, the drug fenetylline, under the commercial name Captagon, is the most commonly abused stimulant in the Kingdom.
