DAMMAM, 14 June 2007 — A girl at a high school in this Eastern Province city came up with a clever idea to re-take an exam, the daily Al-Yaum reported yesterday. Namely she said she was thirsty and asked for a glass of water, then spilled the water on the answer sheet and asked for a new one. The teacher said she knew what the child had done, but relented and allowed her to have another answer sheet for a do-over, no doubt teaching every other girl in the classroom this trick for getting a fresh answer sheet.

Summer Heats Up Girl’s School

RIYADH, 14 June 2007 — Sociological studies have shown that crime increases in urban centers during the summer months. Some speculate that this is due to the fact that when the weather is warmer people are more likely to be outside, and some of these folks are inevitably going to be up to no good. Others speculate that the heat itself may play a factor in violent crime, making people more irritable than at milder temperatures. A girl’s school in a Riyadh district this week seemed to lend credence to the theory that heat and violence are related. It’s mid-June and in Saudi Arabia that means peak temperatures for the year will be around for the next three to four months. Teachers at this school told the Al-Jazirah newspaper in a report published yesterday that they believe a rash of fights that have broken out among students recently could be attributed to the heat. They say that the end of the school year right before summer break is the time students become a noticeably testier. It may not be a coincidence that this irritability comes when temperatures start to linger at around 45 degrees centigrade (113F) in Riyadh day in and day out.
