RIYADH, 14 June 2007 — Minister of Water and Electricity Abdullah Al-Hussayen, who is also the chairman of the board of directors of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), said in a press meeting in Riyadh yesterday that the current water tariff in the Kingdom needed to be restructured to make water consumption more realistic. Under the current system, “a family of six pays only about SR5… which is not even enough to cover the collection cost.”

The minister also said that SWCC privatization process is progressing as scheduled. It is being studied by the Supreme Economic Council at present, he added.

The minister also said that the electricity sector would be restructured in which a mother company called Saudi Electricity Company will supervise subsidiary companies.
