DUBAI, 20 July 2007 — Police here have arrested a gang of thieves who had committed a string of burglaries in upscale Mirdif area.

The burglars had stolen jewelry, watches and other precious objects from villas in the area. The gang consisted of four Arab men and an East European woman. According to the Criminal Intelligence Department at Dubai Police, the gang members had committed a lot of such crimes and only concentrated on the Mirdif area.

After receiving complaints from house owners police set up a team to arrest the gang members. “We realized that we were dealing with the same gang because their modus operandi was similar,” said Col. Khalil Ibrahim. The criminals would prey on villas that had low fences or had gates that were not securely locked, said Col. Ibrahim, who is the acting head of the CID. Some of the owners had also left their windows open or they had left valuable belongings where anybody who walked in could just take them.

After a few days of monitoring the area the police arrested three men who were driving a saloon car. They found in their possession money and jewelry that they could not account for.
