JEDDAH, 21 July 2007 — Jeddah Mayor Adel Fakieh announced yesterday that the municipality would implement some of the recommendations that came out of the recently held workshop with the city’s young people.

The mayor also called for a workshop with high-ranking municipality officials to discuss and study the outcome of the youth workshop to find the best ways of implementing the recommendations, according to Mohammed Jamal Abo Imarah, municipal spokesman.

The youth workshop recommendations concerned the development of the city’s infrastructure and the city’s historical area, constructing more public parks, graffiti walls and playgrounds around the city, and creating book clubs and science centers that would adopt talented and creative youth, he said.

Recommendations also included providing summer jobs for students and creating bicycle lanes, adding more sand to the beaches, giving more leeway to water sports, sports facilities in every district in addition to a main public library, he said, adding that they have also requested an annual cultural festival similar to the Janadriyah festival in Riyadh.

He said that one of the first recommendations that are ready for implementation is to establish a special committee in the municipality that concerns the youth, which would hold regular meetings to discuss the youth’s problems and become their sound to the authorities.

About the female youth outcome during the workshop, many new and good ideas came to the light, including offering jobs for women in the Municipality by creating a special department for women, using more women architects and designers to help in planning the city and creating more clubs and centers for women around Jeddah, he said.
