MUSCAT, 25 August 2007 — Six members of a family were killed in a road accident involving four vehicles in Oman’s southern province of Dhofar on Thursday. Seven passengers were injured, some critically.

According to an official announcement, Royal Oman Police and Royal Oman Air Force rushed their ambulances to the spot. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. No other details were available.

The tragedy took place on a highway to Salalah, Dhofar’s lush green capital, currently the scene of Khareef (Summer) Festival 2007, which is growing in popularity every year with more and more sight-seers from neighboring Gulf states pouring in to savor the joy of a bracing climate, away from a sultry summer back home.

Of late, the number of road accidents has been on the decrease in the sultanate, but the fatality rate has gone up, largely because of speeding.
