AHSA, 4 September 2007 — He demanded her money. She refused. He married a younger woman as a second wife. This is what yesterday’s Al-Madinah daily reported happened recently in a marital dispute over money. The husband wanted a percentage of his wife’s income for his own personal use. The wife not only refused but insulted her spouse as being ignorant and, er, inadequate. The report didn’t go into great detail about what she meant, but the husband was so outraged over the insult to what he called his “manhood” that he took revenge on his wife by marrying the neighbor’s daughter. Of course, the plan could backfire: Two women could become friends and gang up on their husband, who works as a high-school teacher. Perhaps, outnumbered, he might even be asked for a portion of his salary.
