NEW DELHI, 18 September 2007 — Tension prevailed in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) following the murder of a student on Sunday night. Mazhar Naeem from Meerut, was a B.Sc. engineering student and resident of Aftab Hostel. Unidentified persons attacked him in a deserted lane near his hostel. He was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical college, where he was declared brought dead.

Agitated over his murder, hundreds of students went on a rampage yesterday morning, setting fire to Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Aziz’s residence. The VC was not at home, when the incident took place, police said.

The students also attacked AMU staff club and the proctor office, inflicting heavy damage on property.

Tension on the campus led it to be closed sine die yesterday. The students residing in hostels have been asked to vacate the hostels within 48 hours. The executive council members held an emergency meeting immediately after the VC’s residence was attacked.

A high-level probe has been ordered into all incidents of violence and vandalism in the campus during the past one year, sources said. The AMU will also approach the center to order a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) probe into killings on the campus since April last, sources said.
