MUMBAI, 21 September 2007 — There was confusion in the state political circles after a television channel reported early yesterday that Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had resigned following a directive from Congress party President Sonia Gandhi.

Deshmukh, who is in Marathwada region, told Arab News the report about his resignation was wrong. “I have not resigned nor have received any directive from the Congress president or the Congress high command in Delhi to resign” he said.

The chief minister who has been under pressure from dissident groups led by Revenue Minister Narayan Rane to resign, said the news of his resignation was an attempt by the vested interests to create confusion in the party and the people of the state.
