YANBU, 22 September 2007 — The condition of Fateema Al-Refaie, a 33-year-old Saudi woman who was in coma for the last two months, has improved considerably and she has started recognizing relatives who come to visit her, the patient’s brother said.

“Fateema has also started moving her hands and legs and we hope she will soon return to normal,” said Eid Al-Refaie. The news has brought happiness to Fatee

Fateema fell into coma after she was allegedly administered a prohibited antibiotic. The doctor who administered the injection, reportedly a Syrian, has been suspended.

Dr. Sahl Salama, director general of the Health Affairs Directorate in Madinah, has reported the case to the Board of Legal Medicine in order to determine the extent of culpability of the doctor and the nurse and issue the punishment.
