JEDDAH, 10 October 2007 — The King Khaled Charitable Foundation yesterday announced plans to institute a prize in the name of the late king for promoting social services.

The prize will have four categories: best scientific research in social sciences; the best national achievement prize to encourage efforts of individuals and organizations; social responsibility to honor private institutions that comply with social responsibility standards; and the best social project that provides excellent services to society.

The decision to institute a prize for social service was made during a meeting of the foundation’s board of trustees, chaired by Asir Governor Prince Faisal ibn Khaled.

Princess Nouf bint Khaled, Princess Moudha bint Khaled, Prince Hussa bint Khaled, Princess Mashael bint Khaled and Princess Bandari bint Khaled attended the meeting, which was held at the foundation’s headquarters in Riyadh.

In his opening speech, Prince Faisal, deputy chairman of the foundation, emphasized the charity’s determination to carry out projects that would improve the living condition of Saudi people.

He said the prize was introduced to honor the achievements of Saudi people and appreciate their contributions for the welfare of society.

Princess Bandari bint Abdul Rahman, director general of the foundation, said the details of the prize would be announced after Eid Al-Fitr. She noted the foundation’s efforts in classifying charitable organizations in the Kingdom.

“We have decided to collect information related to the life and history of King Khaled; establish a museum for the king’s possessions and set up another museum on the Internet,” she said.

The foundation will also establish a library, a databank, a documentary, an illustrated book and an encyclopedia on the king. The board meeting reviewed the foundation’s social development projects and plans to sign a cooperation agreement with the UN Economic & Social Commission for West Asia (ESCWA). It also decided to sell Khalediya Tower in Riyadh and invest the money in viable projects whose returns will be used to finance the foundation’s activities.
