Landslides Kill People in Eastern Philippines

MANILA, 29 October 2007 — Five people, including three children, were killed in landslides set off by heavy rains in the eastern province of Catanduanes, an official said yesterday.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) chief Glen Rabonza said three fishermen were also reported missing on Saturday in the island province, 360 km southeast of Manila.

Rabonza said all the five fatalities were from two villages in Baras town. He said landslides buried a couple and their two young children in the village of Bagong Sirang, and the fifth victim was a 10-year-old girl who was killed in another landslide in the village of Osmeña.

Rabonza said the three missing fishermen from the town of Bato.

Local officials in the towns of Caramoran, San Andres and San Miguel also reported landslides in their respective areas, but there were no casualties, he said.

The weather bureau warned of more rains and strong winds in the eastern Philippines in the next few days as a low-pressure has developed in the Pacific Ocean.
