RIYADH, 11 November 2007 — A cargo train heading from Riyadh to the Eastern Province collided with a stationary train south of Riyadh late Friday.
A Civil Defense spokesman said six train compartments were on fire as a result of the collision. No deaths have been reported, but the driver of the cargo train and a supervisor were hospitalized.
Police and officials from the Saudi Railway Organization are investigating the accident.
Five civil defense units, several ambulances from the Saudi Red Crescent and local police took part in the rescue operation.
“The case has been transferred to railway police after rescue operations were completed,” said Capt. Abdullah Al-Qaffari, spokesman for the Riyadh Civil Defense.
