ABHA, 17 November 2007 — Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attempted suicide of a newly divorced woman.
Fatima K., 21, was brought to Khamis Mushayt General Hospital with gunshot wounds last Thursday.
“Bullets were successfully removed from her through surgery and she is in a stable condition now,” a source at the hospital told Arab News.
According to hospital and police sources, Fatima refused to eat, drink and speak to health workers, who wanted to know why she had shot herself.
Col. Abdullah Al-Karani, a spokesman for Asir police, said, “The woman is in a very desperate state and doesn’t have the desire to eat or speak. She shot herself with her father’s gun. ... We will investigate this case and question people close to her.”
According to her mother, Fatima was recently divorced after a brief marriage. Her husband asked her to cut relations with her family or face divorce. On refusal, Fatima was divorced. After that she became very depressed and developed a bad temper.
Fatima underwent psychological treatment for some time but her father forced her to stop it. Last Thursday, while all her family members were at home, Fatima entered her bedroom and asked her sister to leave.
“After that we heard a gunshot from her room. She’d shot herself with her dad’s gun,” said her mother.
