MAKKAH, 1 January 2008 — Police are investigating the recent discovery of a decomposing body of a man at a remote location in the Al-Jamoum Province.
Abdul Mohsen Al-Mayman, Makkah police spokesman, told Arab News that a local citizen discovered the body and that a team led by Col. Muhammad Al-Bugami, head of Al-Jamoum police, is leading investigations. “The body has now been transferred to Al-Jamoum General Hospital,” said Al-Mayman, adding that investigators also found a pick-up truck at a distance from the body.
“The owner of the vehicle was summoned for questioning. He told police that around six months ago he picked up a hitchhiker while driving from Riyadh to Makkah and that the hitchhiker stole his vehicle while he was having breakfast in the Al-Sail region,” said Al-Mayman.
He said a cell phone was also found close to the body. When contacted by police, its registered owner said his phone had been stolen. “The body has not yet been identified. The man seems to have died of natural causes and there is no suspicion of any criminal act,” Al-Mayman said.
