RIYADH, 3 January 2008 — Four Saudi suspects, aged between 23 and 33, were apprehended here for allegedly abducting a boy and attempting to rape him, police announced yesterday.

The police said they received a call from a bystander who reported that he had seen a group of four locals in a Ford sedan abducting a boy in one of the streets of the capital and speeding away to an unknown destination.

After gathering data on the color and model of the car, the police immediately deployed special teams to monitor desert areas and rest stops on the outskirts of the city where captors usually take their victims in such cases.

A patrol unit spotted a vehicle matching the description in Al-Thumama area. Backup was called and the car was forced to stop by the police. The young boy, whose nationality and age were not disclosed, was found in the rear seat of the car.

Police said they found a pistol and 17 bullets after searching the suspects and the car. They said the young boy had been saved and returned to his family thanks to swift action by officials.

In another case, police arrested five Saudis aged between 19 and 29 for stealing a number of cars in the capital.

A Filipino national reported to the Batha police station that his Jeep had been stolen. Police patrol cars were given a description of the vehicle. The two suspects were spotted driving the car in a city neighborhood.

They were stopped and arrested on the spot.

Police were able to catch three other Saudi suspects who collaborated with the duo in stealing a number of cars. All of the suspects are in police custody.
