JEDDAH, 3 January 2008 — The leading football club in the Western Province Al-Ittihad announced the appointment of Jamal Arif as media and publication general director succeeding Adnan Jastaniya who resigned earlier this week. According to the chairman of Ittihad, Jamal Abu Omarah, the meetings with the club’s honorary members are to continue despite misunderstandings that might happen among them. He said Ittihad goalkeeper Tayseer Al-Nateeif’s contract was renewed for additional three years. ”As long as the player is devoted to stay with the team we will try our best to ensure that happens, and that is why we are trying to complete Saud Kariri’s contract procedures,” Omarah said in reference to the player who is being eyed by other teams. Meantime, Ittihad are trying to keep table tennis player Abdulaziz Al-Abbad from switching clubs despite a tempting offer from Al-Fath club.
Mobily Tennis Championship
JEDDAH — The Mobily Tennis Championship for boys, youth and men categories got under way yesterday in Al-Ahsaa Eastern Province. The three days event will run at Prince Abdullah ibn Jluwi Sports City with 36 players from 19 clubs seeing action. These clubs are Al-Hilal, Al-Washm, Al-Jeel, Al-Qadisiya, Al-Ibtisam, Al-Faisali, Al-Qaqarrah, Al-Majzal, Al-Zulfi, Al-Safa, Al-Amal, Al-Nojoum, Al-Salam, Al-Hazm, Al-Ittihad, Tuwaiq, Al-Tarf, Al-Ittihad of Riyadh, and Al-Ittihad of Dammam. According to Rasheed Al-Hamad, secretary-general at Saudi Tennis Federation, the event includes singles competitions in various categories. Saudi champion Fahad Al-Saad will be back in harness after being sidelined for the Pan Arab Games because of injury. “The competition will be tough and very exciting specially for players in the men’s category,” assured Al-Hamad.
Asian Handball Event in Kuwait
JEDDAH — The Asian Handball Federation announced the 10th Asian Cup Winners Cup handball championship would be held in Kuwait third week of January. Al-Qadisiya is the host club of the tournament. The clubs entered would include those who saw action in the 11th Pan Arab Games in Egypt in November.
