JEDDAH, 10 January 2008 — Two years ago a 64-year-old widower proposed to a 52-year-old woman, but the woman declined because she said she was busy raising her granddaughter, who had lost her parents in a car accident when she was very young. Now, according to yesterday’s Al-Madinah newspaper, the granddaughter — who recently graduated from high school — has accepted a wedding proposal from a suitor. Upon hearing the news, the elderly man returned and proposed once again. This time the woman accepted on one condition: she and her granddaughter be married on the same night. The condition was accepted and the wedding arrangements are currently being organized.

Irate Bank Customer on ATM Rampage

DAMMAM — Talk about holding a serious grudge! A young man in this eastern Saudi city had such a disagreement with a local bank that he decided to drive his car through the bank’s main entrance. The man was arrested, jailed and fined SR100,000. According to yesterday’s Al-Yaum newspaper, during his incarceration the man openly vowed that he wasn’t through with taking out his anger on the financial institution. (Neither the name of the bank nor the nature of the man’s disagreement was mentioned in the report.) After settling his fine and being released, the man kept his promise and was again arrested later for going on a rampage smashing up local ATM machines. Again, the man was fined and later released. Again the man went out and attacked local ATM machines. And yet again he was fined and released. Most recently, Dammam police spokesman Col. Abdulaziz Al-Sulaiman said they are still investigating the latest incident where smashed ATMs were found. They have a sneaking suspicion about who might be responsible for the vandalism... once again.
